Music freak (at high speed)

Product of  an unusual breeding of two chemists, the music freak usually goes fast, travelling through the beats of songs at high speed. Emotion in music is everything to him, for hidden in the gaps between beats lies his main point of interest. Those gaps are filled by the listener with imagery and memories from another scene and thus also with the strongest feelings and emotions. Those gaps are the natural habitat of the music freak.

The music freak loves the challenge of fast beats, for there seem to be so few gaps left between notes. But he knows better, and uses his traveling speed to grasp even more gaps in even the speediest beats. Music as he knows it is a fractal of spaces between beats, infinetly complex and ever self-similar, capable of containing more and more gaps to be filled with emotion, with each new iteration.

To grasp those musical fractals, the music freak must analyze the current beat, while framing it within the previously seen notes, and, at the same time, iterating through the possible notes and emotions hidden in the upcoming beats. He needs to clearly understand the present moment as to enjoy it, but at the same time he is concerned anticipating the infinite nature of the fractal he got himself into, so as not to break the flow that takes him deep into the music. One bad move, one wrong choice of a song, and he will step a thousand steps backwards.

The music-crunching machine that the music freak has as a brain could be mistakenly taken by a casual observer as being high on something, given its unstoppable, yes, sometimes even unconfortable s.p.e.e.d. But this is far from reality, as the musik freak always travels fast; it really lies in his very nature and there is nothing he can do about it. It also takes years to master surfing within the inner waves of consciousness; a task that the music freak does not take lightly.

The power of those gaps between beats lies in the unconscious feeling of oneness that, if the right melody is played, can unite even the most antagonic extremes. On the other hand, the music freak knows that the wrong beats can elicit the most violent behavior in people. One bad move, one bad word, one beat out of synch,  and a gitar could be set on fire and people may start shouting. Thus he is very carfeul about sharing music with other people.

The music freak is often silent at parties, specially when first being introduced to a new scene. There are just so many emotions on each song, worse yet, multiplied by the number of new people he is getting to know and risen to the power of the infinite complexity of the fractal. Thus he needs to often be satisfied with only a slight approximation of what in reality is happenning right there and then.

He considers his best friends to be the ones with whom he can share those fractals, sometimes going on entire days and nights just listening and sharing. Even so he knows that his fractals are just vague approximations. But with each iteration he has the illusion of being closer to understanding the whole thing.

Once he has the impression that he has a good enough approximation, he might be bold and try and put on a song or two for other people, e.g. at a party. He loves unblocking the hidden energy that lies within those fractals that others may not be aware of. Even so he is not a DJ since DJs put tracks that set the mood by playing the right beats. The music freak, on the other hand, attempts to elicit someting new by playing the right gaps between beats. He loves to share, but sharing means for him sharing those scenes and emotions and not the beats itselves.

The music freak is also not a musician, for he concentrates on infinite gap fractals and not on the notes themselves. On rare occasions does the music freak play music, mainly to make some point. But it almost always sounds quite weird, because there is no musical representation for the complement of beats that are the fractals that the music freak is passionate about. He also doesn't rehearse at all, and it really shows.

You can recognize the music freak easily, for he always wears headphones. He knows that any time and any place could be right for understanding some deeper secret of a song; loosing those opportunities is his biggest frustration, so he always carries some form of music around.

He is often tyred for the inmense effort he puts into his actions. Given the infinite nature of fractals, he is often frustrated by his own mortality and for not being able to see through all of them in the very limited time he has. Therefore, and also because of his speedy nature, he doesn't get much sleep.

In his daily life it becomes quite apparent why he is called a freak: always tapping his dancer foot, banging his head as he travels through the railroads of ordinary life. All he looks for in life is music; getting to see through yet another iteration of one of those fractals is his very reason to exist.
